Modern European Home – West Bountiful, UT

The Modern European design is admired by many for it is not as tough as the current trends in modern interior design. The European elements create a sense of calmness and sophistication. We love how it brings a balanced feel of elegance, but not too opulent; and contemporary, but not too edgy. Located in West Bountiful, Utah, working on this project with this design direction is always a bliss.

Inspired by the cobblestone streets, entering the home will immediately give you a feel of modern-day Europe. We used Ironworks Brick with a sloppy grout and white washed finish for a subtle rustic look. To make it more interesting, we added an inlaid border around and incorporated a herringbone pattern. If the grouting or the brick breaks, the modular nature of this material makes them easy to replace. And overtime, the patina it creates is a great enhancement – it makes it look more authentic and achieves a feel of history and tradition. We installed the ironworks brick flooring not only in the entryway but also in the mudroom and the powder bath – to give continuity and make it the first highlight of the house.

Following the European design aesthetic, we used Calacatta marble subway cut tiles on the kitchen backsplash, taking advantage of mother nature’s beauty. From quarries in the mountains of Carrara, Italy; and used for castles and cathedrals, it is truly an elegant, luxurious, and timeless material. We sealed them to protect it from modern-day harmful chemicals as this is a natural-made material and porous.

For the master bathroom floor, we used Calacatta Gold pickets, in border and diamond-patterned with square Arista marble tiles to exude a sophisticated, upscale and classic ambiance. Together with the Arista 3×6 wall tiles adorning the shower walls up to the ceiling and the tub surround – the room comes together in a tasteful mix of elegance and subtlety. The natural variations of both marble tiles combined is character enough to the room that you won’t even need an accent tile or trim anywhere. It’s as if you are inside a palace’s elegant bathroom that feels cozy and not too ornamental – anyone could have a fancy bath experience anytime they want.

In this house’s laundry room, we spiced it up with a handmade encaustic cement tile with a brushed bronze accent. Encaustic cement tiles are sought after for its authenticity, sustainability, and exclusivity. By using this in the laundry room, not only does it makes the space interesting and fun, but also regal. The material’s natural variations and the bronze accent incorporated into the tile elevated its beauty even more – a game changer in small sized rooms. The tiles complement the appliances and looks great together with the other brass accents. And as always, we applied a penetrating sealer as this is a porous natural material, to protect it from stains.
